Sustainability Success with NativeEnergy
The AAR is making it easy for members to purchase Renewable Energy Credits when traveling to the AAR & SBL Annual Meetings. By simply clicking a box during the registration process, members can choose to give $16 to NativeEnergy.
The AAR’s Sustainability Task Force selected NativeEnergy because of its commitment to reducing greenhouse gases while supporting its sustainability projects. NativeEnergy helps assist Native American, farmer-owned, community-based renewable energy projects that create social, economic, and environmental benefits. These projects displace electricity from fossil fuels and reduce other greenhouse gas emissions.
The AAR and SBL are pleased to have collected a total of $10,784 from 674 participants attending the 2018 Annual Meetings in Denver for this carbon offset program. Along with a $500 donation for the AAR and SBL’s staff travel, we sent NativeEnergy a check for $11,284. These funds were split towards the two projects: Seneca Meadows Landfill Gas to Energy Project and the REDD Project in the Yaeda Valley. To learn more about NativeEnergy, visit http://www.nativeenergy.com/. To see statistics from previous annual meetings, please see here.
NativeEnergy Projects Supported by AAR and SBL
This year, we have decided to support two new projects: Project Sky Wind Project, India and the Capricorn Wind Ridge Wind Project, Texas.
The Project Sky Wind Project is located in the state of Maharashtra, India. The project is intended to meet the power requirements of small and medium scale industries using the electricity generated from the wind turbines and reduce GHG emission and promote sustainable development. In the absence of this project, the equivalent amount of electricity would have been generated by the power plants connected with the central grid in India, which is predominantly based on fossil fuel.
In addition to providing clean energy, the project has instituted programs to improve the lives of the people in the project area. The project has taken on several community development initiatives including:
• Road/Infrastructure development – This effort has helped increase access in rural communities for accessibility to local schools, cultural shrines, and better access to local market for agricultural crops.
• Improved drainage development – The area experiences water shortages, and these efforts to divert water to check dams and retaining pools can increase water infiltration and availability.
• Involvement in local schools – The project has installed water filters to provide access to clean drinking water at village schools, provided scholarships to local students, developed a blood donation program, created a youth development program to support young students, and supported local cultural activities.
The other project is the Capricorn Ridge Wind Project, which is located in the Sterling and Coke counties in Texas. The Project consists of a 112.5 megawatt wind generation plant consisting of 75 turbines. Our financial support will bring to this project a portion of its above-market development and construction costs, helping it achieve and maintain economic viability.
The AAR and SBL are continuing this program in 2019. We currently have a 6.67% combined participation rate! We hope to maintain or improve on that as more members register in the coming months for the 2019 Annual Meetings. We encourage you to make this inexpensive commitment to helping make our meetings more environmentally friendly.
Thank you to all of our AAR contributors in 2018
