With funding provided by the Khyentse Foundation, the American Academy of Religion will award travel grants to support the participation of native Himalayan or Tibetan scholars at the 2020 and 2021 AAR Annual Meetings. This travel grant program encourages inclusivity for scholars from the religiously and ethnically diverse wider geographic region of Inner Asia, Himalayas, and Tibet. The members of the AAR Tibetan and Himalayan Religions Program Unit will select the grant winners. There will be two grant cycles: one in 2020 (open) and one in 2021 (opening in 2021).
To be eligible to apply, applicants must be accepted to participate on a panel or session at the AAR Annual Meeting. Please note: The deadline to submit proposals for the 2020 AAR Annual Meeting has passed (March 2, 2020). Notification of proposal status has also been completed at this time.
Grant winners within North America will receive $1,500 USD. International grant winners will receive $2,500 USD. The grant funds will be dispersed in US currency only. International grant winners are responsible for converting funds.
Eligible travel expenses include roundtrip standard coach air/train fare, ground transportation, lodging, meals, and Annual Meeting registration. No indirect costs, such as administration fees or conversion costs, are permitted.
Grant recipients must submit a final report detailing participation in the Annual Meeting and supporting documentation for expenses by December 31 of the award year.
