A Message from the Executive Director
Friends:
This issue of the Academy’s e-Bulletin
contains news and resources to support your work in the study of religion
– as students, teachers, conferees, and administrators. There is a
good deal of information on our upcoming Annual Meeting in Washington:
you can learn about everything from name badges and registration to special
workshops and directions around Washington.
The news on this front is exciting, not least because we are expecting our
largest Annual Meeting to date. At the AAR’s Executive Office in Atlanta we are taking
bets about whether this joint meeting with the SBL will break the 11,000 barrier! This e-Bulletin also
contains other news, including an online discussion board starting November 6
with the Excellence in Teaching Award winner Patricia O’Connell Killen.
Additionally you will find news about online vitae and the EIS program, a
Call for Papers in our Journal, announcements and a call for nominations for
our Excellence in Teaching Prize, and a call for nominations for our Marty
Award. This month’s issue also has a number of links intended to serve
our student members. Please review the information in this bulletin and if

Name
badges are in the mail for pre-registrants. Pick up a badge holder
onsite and head directly for sessions and exhibits. If you have not received
your badge before leaving for Washington, you
can pick one up at Registration, in Washington
Convention Center’s
West Registration. If you lost your name badge, a replacement costs $5 at the
NAME BADGES window.

Registration
Hours: (CC – West Registration) are Friday (1:00-6:00);
Saturday (8:00-5:00); Sunday (8:00-5:00); Monday (8:00-5:00); Tuesday
(8:00-10:00 am).

Annual
Meetings Program At-A-Glance will be available in the registration
area of the Washington
Convention Center as well
as the lobbies of the Renaissance Washington and Grand Hyatt Washington Hotels.
The Program At-A-Glance lists all sessions, updates, corrections, and room
locations. Please note that room locations are not printed in the Program
Book.

Department
Chairs: Are some of your undergraduates planning to attend the
Annual Meeting? In order to make the meeting feel a bit less
overwhelming, Warren Frisina is organizing a brief, informal Saturday gathering
where undergraduates from other schools could meet one another and receive a
bit of orientation. If you are interested, please contact Warren at warren.frisina@hofstra.edu. Let
him know how many students you expect to attend and whether a 60-minute
Saturday gathering before the opening plenary is viable for your
group. Also, share any thoughts on how to best use the time to help
ensure they have a good experience at the meeting.

Chairs
Workshop – Personnel Issues: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
will be conducted on the Friday before the Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.
Betty DeBerg, University of Northern Iowa, and Chester Gillis, Georgetown University,
will lead the interactive workshop, and Daniel Aleshire, Association of
Theological Schools, will join them as a panelist. For more information, please

Registration is $100 and on-site only. Discounts are available for multiple
registrants from the same department/program.

Call for Papers JAAR
Focus Issue: “Religion in Africa.”
The Journal of the American Academy
of Religion seeks papers on all aspects of the study of religion in Africa for a focus issue to be published in 2007.
Papers should be 6,000-8,000 words in length and should be received at the
address below, no later than Monday, February 5, 2007. Submissions should
include three hard copies of the manuscript along with a copy on disc (using a
standard word-processing program in either PC or Mac format). An abstract
of not more than 150 words should accompany each manuscript. Manuscripts without abstracts will not be considered
until an abstract is received. Please provide full contact
information, including email, on a detachable cover page; please do not put your name or any contact
information on the pages of the paper itself, for that would foil
the anonymous review process. All manuscripts accepted are subject to

Excellence in Teaching Award
- Nominate
a colleague for the AAR’s Excellence in Teaching Award:
The AAR’s Committee on Teaching and
Learning accepts nominees for its annual award, which recognizes the
importance of teaching and honors outstanding teaching in the field. The
deadline for nominating someone is January 10. See details at http://www.aarweb.org/awards/teaching/.
Martin E. Marty Award
To nominate someone for the AAR's Martin
E. Marty Award, which recognizes extraordinary contributions to the public
understanding of religion by those whose work speaks to the public as well as

the “Especially for Students” program offerings at the 2006 Annual

the Decennial Celebration of the Student Liaison Group at the AAR’s
Annual Meeting. A conversation on the past, present, and future of student
participation and advocacy will be followed by a reception from 4:00 PM-6:30 PM
on Saturday, November 18.
